The coin was introduced on 21 April 1983 to replace the Bank of England one pound note, which ceased to be issued at the end of 1984 and was removed from circulation (though still redeemable at the Bank's offices, like all British coins and banknotes) on 11 March 1988. Introducing the 1983 1 Pound Coin After it was discovered that one pound notes, on average, only survived for about nine months in circulation, the Royal Mint issued this one pound coin in 1983 on 21 April, for the Queen’s birthday. A one pound coin can survive at least for 40 years. The one pound note would be removed from circulation by 1988.
